July 2 – August 24, 2012
We offer 8-weeks of full-day camp for for children over the summer break. Due to the many field trips, campers must be 6 years old and have completed K2. Please contact us with any specific questions at director@jpkidsarts.org.
Students enjoy exceptional programming and enrichment in a safe, fun environment at a competitive price. Each vacation week includes both site-based activities and field trips. The daily program involves both active and quiet indoor and outdoor play (weather and schedule permitting.)
Choose one week, several or all eight… your kids will have an unforgettable adventure!
Activities when we are not making art include:
- Swim twice a week at a local pool
- Learn to grow vegetables in our community garden and prepare food
- Field trips every week
- Engage with artists, musicians and performers
- Trips to a Beach or other waterplay every Friday
- Summer Reading in partnership with Boston Public Schools and the Boston Public Library at the Sedgwick (Jamaica Plain) branch
2012 Weekly Sessions (themes, activities and hours are currently tentative and subject to change)
ART IN THE CITY: Week 1 (July 2nd-6th, closed on the 4th of July)
This week is focused on public art in urban spaces. We’ll look at new movements such as “knit graffiti”, “light graffiti” and street installations, as well as classic city murals. By the end of the week, we’ll have created our own public art to be shared with our own city. The creativity and spirit of this week will knock your socks off!
MUSIC OF THE PEOPLE: Week 2 (July 9th-13th)
We’ll learn folk music from a variety of cultures, looking at how song can affect social change. We will practice melody and percussion with workshops in singing and other instruments. We’ll learn a host of vibrant songs, we’ll write a few of our own, and we’ll perform them for our community at the end of the week!
TRAVELING THROUGH SPACE AND TIME: Week 3 (July 16th-20th)
Curious about futuristic robots or ancient aliens? We’ll explore the future, the past, and the universe around us by making our own art installations and time capsules! It’ll be an adventure of epic proportions.
MULTIMEDIA THEATER: Week 4 (July 23rd-27th)
This week, we’ll get to work on a production that’s never been done before. We’ll write our own silent theater piece using video, painting, and music to create a multi-faceted experience. Every kid will have a role in this collaboration
FOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT: Week 5 (July 30th-August 3rd)
This week will feature the KidsArts! garden as we cook our initial harvest and learn about food systems. We’ll see how we affect our environment on a daily basis. And we’ll visit a local farm too!
GLOBAL DANCE: Week 6 (August 6th-10th)
Looking at dance traditions around the world as well as transnational evolutions of hip-hop dance, we’ll learn a choreographed number to perform for our community. We’ll also have an energetic workshop taught by a local dancer.
CIRCUS ARTS AROUND THE WORLD: Week 7 (August 13th-17th)
From ancient Rome through France, England, Russia and Hungary, we’ll learn about different styles of circuses, and we’ll practice clowning, hoop dance, feather balancing, juggling, and other circus skills. At the end of the week, we’ll invite you to our own circus show!
STANDING UP AND HELPING OUT: Week 8 (August 20th-24th)
We’ll partner with two local non-profit organizations as hands-on volunteers. This week will be uplifting as we feel the power we have to make a difference in our own community. It will leave a lasting impression on all of us!
